"why are we here?"

that was the question my wife posed to me the other day while on the beach as the red sky took hold of the fluffy clouds over the yukatan...

and i said "wow...

i guess we are here to enjoy these world class beaches while inebriated...

to sit at the end of the dock with our buddy who is having a bad day and buy him a beer, put my arm around him and tell him to shut up and stop complaining, then push him in the water for an emergency swim...and do it all over again until he forgets why he was bummed in the first place...

we are here for the shrimp tacos at La Bruja...and the empanadas at La Manolita taco stand down the street...

we are here to soak up the warmth of the people as well as the sun...

to slow down and watch the lazy birds circle in the clouds above us...

to hold hands and walk down the beach and stop and talk to friends we never met before...

we are here to live a little and forget about rush hour traffic, talking heads and a frazzled culture that could implode at any minute but wont as they are all too exhausted anyway...

to listen to a ball game on the radio just like in the old days instead of on tv...

to take a 2 hour lunch at Playa Lancheros...then a 2 hour nap afterwards...

we are here to watch a family of 3 ride their motorcycle in thru their front door to keep it safe at night, cause you wont see that in Golden, Colorado...

we are here to see 8 drunk gringos on a golf cart...and wonder how they escaped cancun...

we are here to dance to Glen Miller with the full moon rising over the Caribbean...then see the sunrise a few short hours later over the same water...

for the Cuda Crawl...Carnival ...and New Years Eve...

to hang with the best friends we ever knew and look forward to meeting many, many more...

we are here to learn some spanish and teach some english and chuckle at the way we all talk to each other in a broken-down slangy-mayan-spanglish...

to enjoy the music and flavor of the political rallies knowing we cant vote, but pretend to vote for the guy with the best speakers on the roof of the golf carts...

we are here to make friends, guacamole and love all afternoon...not necessarily in that order either...

to go to a mexican first communion party where you know nobody and have to lip read spanish cause the double stacked speakers are drowning out grandma and cousin Julio...

to drink more Sol than i thought possible...try a pomegranate margarita...and let a batch of mojitos sneak up on us...

i caught my first fish here even though i have no idea how to fish, and wanna have my kids to do the same...

i hated the feeling when i had to leave, so we decided to stop leaving...

so we are here to go to Zamas a hundred times and watch the best sunsets in the world...

to get drunk with friends and wake up on their couch the next morning...

to talk to each other without the TV, cell phone or computer on...to talk to our kids for an hour straight about nothing and to talk to the iguanas off the back terrace to help us resolve some personal issues...

so tell me, why do you ask?"

she just looked at me and said..."no silly, why are we here when we should have met our friends for dinner 20 minutes ago?"

oh.

right...

well, maybe we should go now...thanks hun…
