i am unsure if anyone else can remember
a song by Johnny Cash entitled "A Boy named Sue"...
i heard it the other day, and boy, did it take me back...
back to the days of my 45 rpm record player i bought from Target...it even had
a switch to play 78 rpm as well...pretty high-tech if you ask me...
i used to spend all my allowance on 45s back in the 6th and 7th grade...Donny
Osmond "Sweet n Innocent", Jerry Lee Lewis "Amos Moses", Commander Cody and
the Lost Planet Airmen "Hot Rod Lincoln...
i think i played them all so much i wore them out...
flash back to the other night...my friends had their 29th anniversary party at
Om...my good friends from La Vida Dulce (shameless plug: www.islatrip.com) had
made it 29 years...so far...what an amazing feat in their lives...i was
honored they asked my wife and i to be with them...
it was Halloween, and most people had costumes (except for only 2 people...my
wife and i)...and we sure had a lot of fun giggling about the silly
ones...Tropical Paradise (fruity hats with a pair of dice hanging
down...pretty creative) and Banano with his Bob Marley style wig and bandana
and makeup fooled me into thinking it was actually Bob Marley...
it was a nice, cool, breezy night...up top at Om where you can see the
stars...what a great place it is...
and that is when i heard it...playing on the great sound system was a voice
from my past...all the way from 6th grade...
i heard the opening lines, and i remembered the lyrics as if i was laying in
bed back in 6th grade, up too late on a school night, with the sound turned
down low enough my folks couldnt hear my 45 rpm record player:
"My daddy left home when I was three
And he didnt leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I dont blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue." "
i tried like crazy to focus on the conversation at the table, but i could not
believe it...in all the times in have been in Om, never once would i think to
hear a country tune from the 60s...
"Well, he must o thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and Id get red
And some guyd laugh and Id bust his head,
I tell ya, life aint easy for a boy named "Sue." "
seems like life is one helluva long road...amazing to me to think of the road
so far...
from Principal Sister Marilyns office for detention at our Lady of Fatima in
Lakewood, Colorado where i would sit after school and wish i could get home
and listen to my 45s...
all the way to Om on Isla Mujeres, Mexico on a Halloween night...
many thanks to Banano...
and Johnny Cash...
at the end of the day today, we have one less day on this planet...
enjoy the road...and...
disfruta la vida...
